Ofsted - December 2015 - Graded Good

Upper Batley High School is delighted to announce that they have been awarded a GOOD judgement by the Ofsted inspection team. Ofsted inspectors visited the school during the last week of term in December and they were impressed by how significantly the school has improved in such a short space of time. Inspectors said "the school has been transformed in the past year". The school has undergone significant changes recently with a new Headteacher, Sam Vickers, being appointed in October 2014.

A new Deputy Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher joined the team in 2015 and there were several new outstanding teachers recruited throughout 2015. The school is now graded as Good in all areas with some outstanding features such as the quality of marking and feedback for learners.

It is the first time since 1997 that the school has been graded as Good by an Ofsted team and inspectors said "the school is a harmonious community in which to learn." Upper Batley High School is also the first school ever in Kirklees to go from a grade 4 to a grade 2 with Ofsted in just 12 months. This is a tremendous achievement by staff and students.

Headteacher Sam Vickers said "I am incredibly proud of all of our staff and students. We have worked extremely hard over the last year to make our school a great school and this judgement endorses all of their great work. We believe a good school is like a good family where we all work together to bring out the best in each other. We have outstanding teachers who are all subject experts and specialists in their field. Our learners are tremendous and collaborate effectively and respectfully with each other and with staff. We have a wonderful team here at Upper Batley. We are the school of choice for high achieving boys."
Ofsted praised highly the quality of marking and feedback in the school and said "there are many examples of excellent practice". Ofsted also said "teachers plan interesting lessons to engage and motivate pupils" and " pupils are polite, courteous and respectful of one another.

The school is certainly on an upward journey and Headteacher Sam Vickers said "next stop outstanding. Congratulations to our amazing Batley team".
